December 2016 SGH Overseas Fieldworks in Tianjin, China

　During December 17-21 2016, 12 students (4 first grade students, 8 second grade students) who have chosen the Global Leadership Course visited Tianjin, China, for their overseas fieldwork. Tianjin, one of the four directly controlled cities in China, is the economic center of the Bohai Sea Bay area and is the largest open port of China in the northern part of the country. The group's visit included learning opportunities in terms of history and culture with regard to visits to Japanese companies, medical facilities, schools (high schools and universities).

〔Day 1〕17 December (Saturday)

Departure: Chubu International Airport → Tianjin

　JAL Japan Airlines flight 841 (JL 841) to Tianjin Binhai International Airport

Zhou Enlai Deng Chaoying Memorial Hall

　Memorial hall about the first Prime Minister of the People's Republic of China, Zhou Enlai and his wife Deng Chaoying. The exhibits are organised according to the themes from Zhou Enlai's childhood and youth periods to the history of China from the nation building stage and Zhou's achievements as a prime minister.

Visit to Tianjin Radio and Television Tower

　At a height of 415.2 m, the Television Tower is the tallest building in Tianjin.There is an observation room at about 250 m, and visitors can have a 360 degrees panorama view of the city. However, because of smog, we could not see as far.

〔Day 2〕18 December (Sunday)

Yang Liuqing Museum (Shi Family Grand Courtyard)

　Yang Liuqing Town is a town known as one of the leading ancient towns in China's northern area with over 1000 years in history.

　Many folk arts such as prints and kites have blossomed.

　There are open air stalls in streets in town and it is becoming an attraction for locals.

　The Shi Family Grand Courtyard is one of the leading famous households in Tianjin and is now used as a museum.

Visiting ancient cultural streets

　Old town with 800 years of history.

　This is the place that can be said to be the birthplace of Tianjin. In the center, there is a temple where the goddess of the sea called Tianhou Temple was celebrated. After visiting the interior of the temple, the group had free activity. Along the street of about 600 meters, there are many shops dealing with old books, toys, traditional handicrafts, foods and drinks.

　Hanamoji (decorative calligraphy) is extremely popular, and scrolls of flora decorative characters, "大願成就"(Fulfillment of the Great Wishes) were on display in front of the Career Guidance Room.

〔Day 3〕19 December (Monday)

Participation in English and Japanese class at Tianjin Foreign Language University Affiliated Foreign Language School→ After that, interaction seminar.

　English lesson conducted for the Year 1 students is All English, a method of teaching English. Students are eager to engage in English conversation. The year 3 high school students' Japanese lesson is held in All Japanese, and they have a good understanding of the Japanese language. At the exchange party, the Chinese students gave speeches and sang, while the visiting students introduced Japanese dance and Japanese traditional toys. There were opportunities for chat among students of the same generation, so the students seemed to be aware of the importance of language skills.

Visit to Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

　Founded as the first university that teaches traditional medicine in China Tianjin University has four faculties, a including medical department. The visiting students were invited to the training room and laboratory where they were shown the laboratory instruments and models. After that they were also shown the consultation room and the rehabilitation and treatment room of the affiliated hospital.

　It was surprising to be given opportunities to see things that are not possible to see in Japan.

〔Day 4〕December 20, (Tuesday)

Tianjin University of Technology

　There are 26,202 students (over 10000 occasional students), 1877 staff members, 61 pursuing bachelor's degree and 69 pursuing master's degrees.

　While it is a university of technology, the students can also learn foreign languages, business, law politics, Chinese culture and so on.

　After visiting the library, process training center and the Chinese language culture school, there was an opportunity to interact with internatinoal students studying there.

Wanmiao agricultural model base

　It was established from the beginning of the 21st century as part of the national agricultural comprehensive development plan. The researches conducted included seedlings research, production research using biotechnology, and growing organic vegetables using microorganisms. The group visited several green houses where paprika, star fruit, red pepper and eggplant were grown.

JEAVANICE (Tianjin) Co., Ltd.

　Local representative office of Taiyo Kagaku Co., Ltd., headquartered in Yokkaichi city, Mie Prefecture. Established the current corporation to conduct bakery business through joint venture with Francois Corporation (head office in Fukuoka city ).

　A tour around the factory was following after a briefing on the company. there will be We took a guided tour along the lines of ingredients mixing, molding, refrigeration fermentation, baking, packaging, shipping of the products.

〔Day 5〕21 December (Wednesday)

From the Modern Tianjin and World Museum to Wu Da Dao (Five Great Roads)

　A historical museum opened in 1953 where more than 100,000 precious materials are exhibited and detailed history and culture of Tianjin are showcased. Pre-admission appointment is required. Entrance is required before the museum opening and the same applies for rental guide equipment.

　After that, the group wondering around the We Da Dao. Wu Da Dao (Five Great Streets) used to be a British concession area from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Many Westerners settled down here and attracted many people as the town that characterizes Tianjin.

Departure: Tianjin International Airport to Chubu International Airport

　Leaving on Japan Airline JL842 departing at 12:35. A student representative presented a souvenir as a token of appreciation to Mr. Liu Zhijun for his care and hospitality during this study trip.

　After 18:00, the group arrived at Chubu International Airport.

　The students went home on trains, bus, or in their family car.

　Below are the reflections on this study trip written by the students on returning to their own country.

・The English lesson of Tianjin foreign language college attached foreign language school was conducted in All English. While the students not only keep up with the lesson, they seemed to understand it completely, thereby having a high level of English. The exchange with the 3 high school students of the department of Japanese became a valuable experience. It is important to interact with local people in a foreign country, and the opportunity to interact with people of the same generation was really good. The students wished they could have more time to interact.

・The group is learning more about different abilities. The local guide, Mr. Liu, was asked, "Is there any problematic differences in China?" In Japan, issues have arisen due to different birth countries, gender, discrimination in the birth areas, and so on. Mr. Liu mentioned that the Chinese people have had many different ethnicity and groups from long ago, so that it is an accepted matter so much so that it is no longer an issue. While the visitors would think that if there were many ethnicity and cultures, there should be a lot of discrimination and disagreements. However, it has become something so natural with the existence of so many differences that it is no longer something that needs special attention. There are still many problems such as environmental and economic problems in China. For this visit, I thought about human rights compared with Japan, but I also thought that I should be aware of other wonderful things in China as different to Japan.

・I was initially biased China and the Chinese people by the news that I thought I will never visit this country. However, the more I got to know about China through this training, the more I realise that it is a country that is indispensable to Japan. Perhaps it is probably because there are still many people in Japan who still have impressions like me of the past I began to feel that I want to change their way of thoughts.
