July 7 (Friday) 17:30-19:00/ First Information Room[Theme] Reading Soseki Natsume's works on the 150th anniversary of his birth

In the lecture, students read excerpt of Soseki Natsume's novels such as " Wogahai wa Neko de aru (I am a cat)" and "Meian (light and dark)". Student discussed and tried to interpret Soseki's thoughts by reading his works.Soseki wrote his novels during the time of Japanese-Sino War and Japanese-Russo War and people lived in that era read his works. Lecturer explained that novels were written under collaboration with "readers" . 16 students from Yokkaichi high school participated the lecture. Some said that the lecture was little too difficult. 3rd grade student asked a question "Soseki appealed that the Japanese civilization at that time was extrinsic, but what factors made such a viewpoint?" Prof. Komori answered "Maybe Soseki's experience in London around 1900 when the British Empire was going down made him such view".
